What was supposed to be an event for the culture turned out to an evening full of confusion and hilarious comments on social media timelines. The “VERZUZ BATTLE” between music legends Teddy Riley and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Started by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, VERZUZ has seen competition from some of music’s elite on Instagram Live. Names like DJ Premier, The RZA, Lil Jon and T-Pain just to name a few. VERZUZ has been a great alternative of entertainment for people stuck inside their homes under quarantine due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic.
This weekend’s battle of the titans was initially set up for a previous date but was postponed as it was revealed that Babyface was recovering from contracting COVID-19 and that he needed more time to get well. Everything appeared to be lined up for a nostalgic Saturday night of fun, as both legends were ready to play hits from their highly admired musical catalogs. That is until Teddy starting issues with his audio. Always the showman, the creator of New Jack Swing was set up in a studio with a complete band and looked to give the fans something more than just hitting play on his smartphone. Keyboards, Turntables, and multiple microphones were present in Teddy’s set up, while Babyface sat alone in a candle lit studio ready and patient as his counterpart struggled to recover his audio settings.
The fans on the other hand were not as patient or forgiving, as most were calling for the battle to be put to an end immediately. After a lengthy back and forth with the band, an associate of Teddy got on camera and asked that the audience give them about thirty minutes or more to get the settings together. The battle brought in north of 500 Thousand viewers and the numbers started shrinking rapidly as the anticipation seemed to be fleeting from the match up. Shortly after, VERZUZ creators Swizz Beatz and Timbaland started an IG Live chat where they explained that what happened was a result of doing too much and that the masterclass of music competition will be postponed for a later time.
